Provincetown and the Giant Dunes

Day trip to Provincetown with two of my nieces who joined me to explore. They were great travelers and also my official photo co-bloggers for the day:

First stop – the GIANT dunes! Dramatic, sweeping landscape and towering dunes to climb up, run or roll down – our own little Sahara desert with the added bonus of water views. Driving on Route 6 through Truro, you simply pull your car onto the right hand shoulder of the road across from the first left exit into P-town. There’s no official parking lot, just pull to the right shoulder and be careful getting in and out of your car. A couple tips:

*Wear shoes through the short entry trail and leave them at the top of the first dune – but keep your socks with you. In the summer, the sand can get very hot and any time of the year the coarse sand may be a bit much for tender toes!

*For anyone who isn’t feeling fit enough for walking through soft sand and climbing the dunes, consider working your way to the top of the first smaller dune – the view will be worth it – bring a towel and book and relax while the rest of your group explores the steeper dunes.

*Definitely bring a small backpack with a couple bottles of water and of course . . . always pack a snack!

Our day started out a bit foggy which added to the mystique but eventually cleared so we could enjoy the view.

After the dunes, we wandered through P-town, checking out shops (especially any with candy), pointing out our favorite pieces of artwork in galleries, a quick stop at the Pirate Museum, a walk along the super-long jetty at the end of town and some fun transportation to wrap up the day.  They say a photo is worth a thousand words, so I’ll let the following photos tell the story of our day trip to P-town . . .

A short path through the trees leads from your car to the first dune.

Fun to walk/hop from rock to rock along the long jetty at the end of town.

Capping off a fun-filled day with a pedi-cab ride back to our car. Our French driver dazzled us with his charming accent and speedy swerving driving style. Merci!
